What Does 'Pos Het' Mean in Ball Python Genetics?
Understanding 'pos het' (possible het) in ball python listings: what the probabilities mean, how to evaluate pos het animals, and when they are worth the gamble.
Pos het explained
'Pos het' means the animal might carry a recessive gene but it has not been confirmed through breeding. The probability depends on the parents' genetics. A 'Pos Het Clown' from a het Clown x normal pairing has a 50% chance of being het Clown. Only a test breeding can confirm or rule out the gene.
Common pos het probabilities
- 66% pos het: the most common listing. Comes from a het x het pairing where the offspring is not visual. Two-thirds of non-visual offspring from this pairing are statistically het.
- 50% pos het: from a het x normal pairing. Each offspring has a 50/50 chance.
- Pos (unqualified): the breeder suspects the gene may be present based on visual cues or lineage, but the probability is not mathematically established. Treat with caution.
Evaluating pos het animals
Pos het animals are typically priced lower than confirmed hets because the buyer accepts genetic uncertainty. For project builders, a pos het at a lower price point can be a smart investment if you are planning test breedings. For pet buyers, pos het status is largely irrelevant unless you plan to breed.
Always ask for parentage and pairing records when evaluating a pos het claim. A reputable breeder will provide the dam and sire genetics that support the probability.
