How live reptile shipping works

Ball pythons ship via FedEx Priority Overnight in insulated boxes designed for live animal transport. The snake is placed in a breathable cloth bag inside a deli cup or secure container, surrounded by insulating material and heat or cold packs appropriate to the season.

Shipments depart Monday through Wednesday to avoid weekend delays at sorting hubs. The breeder monitors weather conditions at origin, destination, and all intermediate hubs before committing to a ship date.

Hub-to-hub shipping

Many breeders, including HD Reptiles, ship hub-to-hub rather than to residential addresses. Hub-to-hub means the package goes from one FedEx facility directly to another, reducing the handling chain and eliminating doorstep exposure. You pick up the package at the destination hub within one hour of arrival.

Confirm your destination hub's address, hours, and identification requirements before ship day. Some hubs require a government-issued photo ID matching the name on the package.

What to do on arrival day

  • Track the package from the moment it ships
  • Arrive at the hub promptly — pickup within one hour is standard
  • Film yourself opening the package in continuous, unedited video (most live arrival guarantees require this)
  • Inspect the animal immediately for signs of distress, injury, or DOA
  • Place the snake directly into its prepared enclosure with water available
  • Do not handle for 7–14 days; do not offer food for 5–7 days
