Buying online vs. in person
The majority of captive-bred ball pythons are sold online through breeder websites, MorphMarket, and social media. Buying online from a reputable breeder typically offers more genetic diversity, better documentation, and clearer health guarantees than pet store purchases.
The trade-off is that you cannot handle the animal before purchase. This makes breeder evaluation, clear communication, and understanding the shipping process essential skills for online buyers.
Step-by-step process
- Research the morph and genetics you want before browsing listings
- Identify breeders with documented lineage, clear photos, and responsive communication
- Ask about feeding history, weight, hatch date, and parentage for any animal you are considering
- Confirm the breeder's shipping policy, live arrival guarantee, and health guarantee in writing before placing a deposit
- Use a protected payment method (PayPal Goods & Services, Venmo Goods & Services, or credit card invoice) — never send money through unprotected channels
- Prepare the enclosure completely before the animal ships — the snake should go directly into a ready habitat
- Arrange hub pickup within one hour of arrival on ship day
Red flags
- No photos or only stock photos of the specific animal
- Refusal to provide parentage or feeding records
- Requesting payment through Friends & Family, cash apps, or cryptocurrency with no protections
- No written health guarantee or live arrival guarantee
- Vague or defensive responses to care and husbandry questions
- Pressure to buy immediately or claims of imminent price increases
